the night time is the right time
ok so i know this is tardy and this song is definitely not about a teeny tiny dog, but here is a brand new one that has come together in the last few weeks. i wrote this in the middle of the night in a fit of pure inspiration which meant another sleepless night. sigh. on the bright side, i’ve never claimed to be a morning person anyway… so i would say i was no more grumpy in the following AM hours than usual.
this was recorded in a shell beach living room with justin and mike. par for the course indeed.
hope you’re enjoying the winter darkness, the night owl in me rejoices in short days so keep an eye out for yours truly lurking in a coffee shop near you. oh if you’d like to hear this tune live, i’ll be at the kruezberg on Tuesday 12/13 at 6:30 with the lovely folks of songwriters at play. i’ll be the lady drinking both a hot beverage and a cold beverage at the same time.
you’re my only hope
okay so maybe i’m suffering from a teeny bout of songwriter’s block. even my insomnia hasn’t come up with anything creative (or even just plain weird) that i can use as a starting point so i’m going to have to ask you all for a bit of assistance.
cast a vote and i’ll give it a shot. whatever song i come up with using the prescribed method will be posted here. i’m at your mercy!
NO VOTING MULTIPLE TIMES!!!
(poll closes on sunday 10/2)
update: sigh. looks like i’m writing a song about a teeny tiny dog.
you know what to do
with the help of friends, i’ve finally found a way to combine my inner nerd with my music geek (who has a healthy dose of exhibitionism). we’ve been guerilla gigging our way through the shops and streets of san luis obispo. here’s one that we recorded in the garden at linnaea’s cafe with the vines and the koi fish as witnesses.
call it a warm up for our show at linnaea’s on august 27 or call it an excuse to do silly things in public places with instruments. either way, you’re right.
parry
this may seem paradoxical to you, but i am at times a really intensely private person. after a series of shows more often than not i will drop off the radar for a while and wander somewhere new, retreat and write or enjoy some awesomely terrible b-movies… consecutively. as it is, i always find myself fumbling on the microphone when i introduce songs because the reasons why a song came to my life get stuck in my brain (somewhere on the right side i think) and refuse to exit via an amplified sound system.
my solution? without skipping a beat, i will tell you where and when i wrote a song. i can recall where each melody was dreamed up, what kind of night it was, if i was standing or sitting, and which guitar that the song materialized out of. I will also tell you with a smile, that the song was written for no one.
but if you have a moment to spare and a pot of coffee, i’ll gladly spin my tales for you and maybe, between one steaming cup and the next, that “no one” will gain a name.
summertime and the living is medium
oh summer, you make me want to spend my days in hammocks listening to etta james and drink beverages with festive umbrellas in them. but alas, all play and no work makes for an unfinished album so rest assured that the reese is getting all her ducks and other various water fowl in a row so she can hit her yet undisclosed release date (don’t worry, it’s sometime in 2011).
we’ve got some all stars coming into track drums and guitar this month, and if you were at some of our shows years and years ago, don’t be surprised to see some familiar faces in the studio tracking away behind all the glass and soundproofing at avalon studios with yours truly. we’ve graduated from livingroom jams and makeshift mic stands crafted with mikeC’s maguyver skills and will hopefully hit a stage near you sometime.
that being said, we’ll happily play your livingroom if you’ll feed us.
now if i only knew what to name the album then we’d be in business…
the remedy
so i’ve spoken to a few friends and they have all let me know (1) that they never know when i’m actually playing in their neighborhood and (2) no, they do not have a facebook profile so it doesn’t count when i send out updates on there.
to that end, i offer up a solution. if you sign up for my mailing list i will not only let you know when i’m going to be in town, i’ll even give you a brand new track off the forthcoming album in return.
deal? deal.
blast this cold
in honor of my my illness, 30 seconds of fever.

that’s the incomparable mikeC on bass. as far as i know, he does not have a fever but he does play a fine upright.
espérame
I’ve been spending a lot of time on the road these days. I
seem to be whiling the hours between work and music and just life in general in
airports and in planes people watching and mostly willing time to move faster
than the crawl it slows to when there is nothing to do but wait. I wait in
lines to be deemed worthy by the TSA to enter their terminals. I wait in lines
for overpriced food and drink. I wait in lines to board planes where I’m forced
to wait until it’s our turn to take off then only wait out the echoing “are
we there yet” in my head as it fades into the droning of jet engines and I’m finally
where I set out to travel to.
The thing with traveling is that the farther you go, the
farther the return trip is. But no matter where I wander, it’s always nice to
return here. As the days grow longer the evenings become that much more magical
where the only thing surpassing the beauty of the sunset is the fleeting sound
of the song in my ear that I’m just about to write.
pure genius
there are few things in life more awesome then watching filipino ingenuity at work. when faced with the fact that my dad needs glasses to (1) see in the first place and (2) get that already corrected vision to be able to look at a menu close up, my dad just does the obvious: he wears TWO PAIRS OF GLASSES AT THE SAME TIME.
if you know me, then this explains a lot about my own character. if you don't know me that well, then you still have to agree that this method is pretty boss.
i’m not familiar with sunrise
so beautiful but so effing cold. an early morning at rampart reservoir in colorado springs. this is why coffee was invented.
